Except for a few sections on roads, the Famous Idaho Potato Marathon course mostly follows the paved Boise Greenbelt Trail along the Boise River.
The course starts south of Boise at Lucky Peak Lake (elevation 2831 feet) and then travels along the river with a net downhill to the turnaround point on Garrett St. (elevation 2600 feet). The course then follows the same path for approximately seven miles of slight uphill grade to the finish at Ann Morrison Park (elevation 2681 feet).
